Silent Night Christmas Carol was written on the eve of Christmas in the year 1818 in Oberndorf, Austria by Vicar Joseph Mohr. Mohr had written the poem “Stille Nacht” in 1816. In the year 1818 Franz Gruber gave music to this melody and got it arranged for two voices, choir and guitar. The carol was sung for the first time on December 24, 1818 at the Midnight Mass. By the year 1955 Silent night one of the most popular carols of the time.
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
