Prenuptials

Prenuptials are a very important part of the weddings today. Prenuptial agreement or prenup is a contract signed between the couple prior to their wedding. With changing times, as both the spouses are working and having individual assets, prenuptials is a safeguard from any type of misunderstandings that may come up later on.

Prenuptials provide the details of their assets and property. It is generally devised to have a clear demarcation of their valuables if they decide to part and go their separate ways sometime in the long run. Honestly speaking, nobody wants to think of prenuptials as the wedding planning are on the way. But this is one practical decision that should be taken.

One way to look at prenups is, this way both the spouse can clearly know about the assets of each other and there will be no secrets that can turn into ugly battles later on.

Uses a Prenuptial Agreement

It was a popular myth that prenuptials were only for the wealthy people. But now this is also changing rapidly. Anyone who works hard to earn a living and has some savings and assets needs a prenuptial agreement. If one is engaged and will inherit some property later on, that should also be mentioned in the prenuptials. Business owners should take their prenuptials very seriously and make each and every part very clear.

Handling the Topic of Prenuptials

Prenuptials are a very sensitive topic and should be handled carefully. It is advisable to bring the topic of prenuptials immediately after engagement. Don’t leave it till a week before the wedding. It can be easily misinterpreted as you have a change of mind and heart. One should not be swayed in sentiments and face the realities of life. Nobody wants to think that their marriage may end in a divorce. But divorces are still happening. So it’s better to come clean in the starting only, to avoid ugly battles later on. Think in this way, you are getting wedding insurance to be prepared for any unforeseen mishaps on the wedding day. It doesn’t mean something has to go wrong. It is just a caution. Same way prenuptials is also a cautionary step to help you protect your future.

The Prenuptial Agreement

The prenuptial agreement is a legal document. So honesty is the best policy. Don’t make unreasonable demands and be fair and just. The agreement should disclose and have clear statements for the payments of debts incurred before the wedding. Knowing everything now will help you in the future. Both the bride and the groom should have their own attorneys read over the agreements before you sign it.

Both the parties should be given adequate time to go over the document in detail. If some matter is not readily agreed upon then it should be handled maturely and openly.

Though a prenuptial agreement is not the most romantic thing, it is one of the most important steps of a wedding.
